Adobe and stucco are the defining wall surfaces of southwestern architecture. They are also the most commonly damaged surfaces when holiday lighting is installed by crews who do not know the material. Cracks, chipped finish, and exposed substrate are unfortunately common after the first season.
Here is how we mount holiday lighting on these surfaces without leaving damage.
Why Standard Clips Fail
Standard plastic shingle and gutter clips are designed for asphalt shingles, fascia, and standard gutter profiles. None of those exist on most desert architecture. Crews who use them on adobe or stucco end up drilling or screwing into the finish, which causes cracks that grow over time and are expensive to repair.
Tile-Safe Mounting
For parapet, flat, and tile roof installs, we use clip systems that hook under barrel tile or sit on top of flat tile without any drilling. The clip carries the load of the light string and distributes it across the tile.
Adobe and Stucco Walls
For lights mounted along an exterior wall rather than a roofline, we use a combination of low-profile adhesive mounts and existing architectural features. Adhesive mounts use a removable structural adhesive that holds through the season and peels off at takedown without lifting the finish. Where the architecture has natural ledges, beams, or vigas, we route the lights along those features to avoid wall contact entirely.
What to Check Before You Hire
Before any holiday lighting crew touches an adobe or stucco home, ask them to explain their mounting plan. If the answer involves staples, nails, or screws driven into the wall surface, walk away. There is no reason in the desert climate to put a single hole in your wall to hang seasonal lights. The right mounting systems exist and a professional crew will know them.
After Takedown
When we take down a holiday install, we leave the wall surface exactly the way we found it. No marks, no residue, no holes. That is the standard. Anything less than that means the wrong mounting system was used.
