Monsoon storms can deliver more rain in an hour than the desert sees in months. Here is how we time installs and seal systems to ride out the season.
Monsoon season in Phoenix runs roughly July through September. It brings sudden microbursts, dust storms, lightning, and heavy rain. For outdoor lighting, that creates two challenges: when to install, and how to seal the system so it rides out every storm.
Install Timing
We do not stop installing during monsoon season, but we plan around it. Our crews monitor the weather forecasts daily and shift work to early morning starts when the afternoon shows storm risk. Holiday lighting installs ramp up in October when the monsoon pattern has typically ended and we have steady dry weather through December.
For permanent lighting, summer installs are completely workable. The lights themselves are unaffected by heat once installed, and our team is acclimatized to Phoenix summers. We just plan around the afternoon storms.
Weatherproofing the System
Every install we do is designed to handle monsoon weather. Specific things we do:
- Sealed junction boxes at every connection point, no open splices
- IP rated weatherproof connectors on all low-voltage runs
- Stainless or coated fasteners that will not corrode after repeated wetting
- Mounting locations chosen to avoid known runoff paths on roofs and parapets
- Slack loops in low-voltage runs so wind does not stress the connection points
- Properly graded ground fixture wells so water drains away from the lens
The result is a system that holds up through wind, rain, and dust without leaks, loose connections, or flooded fixtures.
What to Check on an Existing System
If you have outdoor lighting that was not installed by us, monsoon season is the best time to spot problems. Walk the property after a storm. Look for fixtures with cloudy lenses, exposed wire where the jacket has split, junction boxes that show water staining, and ground fixtures that are sitting in standing water. Any of those is a sign the system was not built for the climate and is on borrowed time.
