Palm uplighting can transform a property at night. Here is how we do it so it looks correct on day one and still looks correct in year ten.

Few things change the feel of a Phoenix or Scottsdale property at night more than a well executed palm uplighting program. Done correctly, it is dramatic, restrained, and reads as architectural. Done poorly, it looks harsh and dated within a year.

Fixture Selection

Palm uplighting calls for fixtures that can put a wide soft wash up a tall trunk. We use brass and stainless in-ground or surface mount fixtures with sealed lenses rated for full immersion. The fixture body should be heavy enough to stay put in monsoon wind and engineered to dissipate heat in the desert.

The color temperature matters as much as the fixture. We use warm white in the 2700 to 3000 Kelvin range for most installs. Some clients prefer a slight amber wash for a softer, more golden look against the trunk texture. We avoid cool blue tones, which read as institutional and clash with the natural color of the palm.

Placement and Aim

A common mistake is placing the fixture too close to the trunk, which creates a harsh hotspot at the base and dim coverage of the fronds. We place fixtures at a distance and angle that washes the entire trunk and lights the underside of the fronds evenly. On mature palms, we sometimes use two fixtures per tree from offset angles to fill in the canopy.

Wiring and Long-Term Service

Low-voltage wire is buried below grade and routed to avoid landscape work and irrigation lines. Every connection is in a sealed junction box. We use stainless fasteners and corrosion-resistant fixture bodies so the system holds up against soil moisture and sprinkler overspray.

What You Can Expect Long Term

A properly installed palm uplight system from us will run for ten years or more with minimal service. LED life on these fixtures is rated in the tens of thousands of hours. The main long-term service items are an occasional lens cleaning and aiming check, both of which we include on annual maintenance plans.
